with acrylic paints for a raised effect in this design.

This is the sample piece,

the goal is to create this look on a large piece of ceramic bisque

and have it be mistaken for a vintage french vase!

Here is the latest project I am working on,

a pillow shaped ceramic vase I made and glazed on the inside.

After painting the background I began decoupaging with paper and lace,

paint and marking pens.

It is not quite finished yet,

I am looking for small alphabet stamps to add along the ankle line

"you are loved" in walnut colored ink.

This is created for a sweet little girl in the hospital battling cancer.

Sweet heart graphics

Roxy Tee shirt found at T.J. Maxx yesterday with this cool graphic design

printed on the front

but looking like an unfinished pencil drawing without color,

finds its way home with me and ....

I pull out my fabric paints for a pick-me-up,

filling in the background to pop the design,

because I really need another painting project !

Knowing I would most likely be wearing it with jeans

I chose deep blue and began painting in the bottom of the heart design,

and taking creative license, chose to eliminate a few extra flowers

and web designs by painting the dark blue right over top of them.

Then I lightened the blue shade as I worked my way up the design

ending with a beautiful turquoise color at the top.

Sweet! & Valentine's Day is less than a month away!

Simple Scarf

While viewing Ralph Lauren's fashion week photos

of ready-to-wear for the spring 2012 collection

showing a myriad of beautiful neck scarfs in pastel colors

including peach and baby blue along with flowy chiffon skirts in sherbet-florals,

worn with cashmere sweaters in sunny yellow and apple green.

I'm inspired to take a look through my current collection of scarfs

to see what I have that may emulate the same look.

I find this little number in the same genre

and discover this variegated eyelash thread in a similar color way.

I can't seem to resist adding a bit of embellishment to give it some texture

using the variegated eyelash thread.

With super easy basting stitches added

this simple scarf can easily transform any ordinary outfit

into something special!

Embellishing with Crochet

I totally surprised myself...

I would never have guessed I would take up crocheting.

This is the story of how it came to be...

I found a dusty pink crochet-look sweater, and loving the color, classic styling, and under $25.00 price, had to have it.

Later in the day I popped into Michael's to purchase small alphabet stamps for another project swirling in my imagination. Unfortunately they didn't have any BUT I did meet the helpful and talented Diana sitting at the front of the store demoing a little green yarn crochet flower....that she gifted to me, thank you Diana!

On my way back into town I stop at Big Lots for baby oil, cotton balls, and various sundries and spy this ball of yarn in their craft section. I love the color, do not knit or crochet but feel compelled to purchase it! Really it is all of a dollar and upon returning back to the cottage and unpack, happily realize it blends beautifully with the color of my new sweater!

I pilfer through a vintage sewing basket full of odds and ends remembering seeing a crochet hook in it, and much later that evening, while curled up on the sofa in the sitting room watching the latest episode of Downton Abbey, I attempt to mimic what Diana had been demoing. After several attempts on the sleeve I finally find my rhythm, pull out the practice yarn after jotting down the algorithm that seems to work.

Not being familiar with crochet terms yet it is a bit vague but doable and I begin with the sleeves, and then tackle the long shawl collar the next evening.

There are certainly a few glitches as I struggled with the yarn that had 3 different type threads in it, but I am pleased with the overall look and especially love how the scallop edge adds to its femininity.

I highly recommend

Seashell assemblage

I pull out a bowl full of seashells and spread them out across the studio work table

and create this seashell assemblage with them using e6000 adhesive.

Holiday decor

Welcoming the holidays with a wreath,

inside or outside the home

is perfect for the beginning of fall season

right through the holidays.

On this traditional style wreath

I especially liked using rose hips instead of the

traditional berries

and the quail rather than a dove.

For a coordinating look in the dining room,

cut a burlap runner and layer it over a white tablecloth

then create a garland down the center

with similar greenery and embellishment.

Consider embellishing with burlap roses with pine cone centers,

and quail eggs with found feathers.

Tabletop treasures

Romantic Homes Magazine asked me to share a few

tips and tricks...

for adding holiday sparkle to our tabletops in this months issue.

Here are a few suggestions...

Consider using mirrors in a variety of ways on your tablescape,

mirrors are wonderful for reflecting light & colors

and even better when paired with candlelights flickering!

Silver with whites are great neutrals.

Add a pop of your favorite holiday color to the neutral color scheme

even pink or turquoise,

by piling your treasured ornaments into a beautifully cut crystal bowl.

Costume jewelry is great for additional holiday sparkle,

raid grandmother's jewelry box for embellishments

on place tags, napkin holders, wreaths and Christmas stockings.

Grandfather's pocket watch adds family history,

sentiment and interest.

Combining old, cherished pieces with new purchases creates original recycling chic,

especially when using collectibles with a family history.

Silver spray paint on dried leaves, berries and pine cones

are rich embellishments and cost so little,

displayed with a nest created out of tinsel

and a bird topping it adds to the sparkling nature scene.

Consider decorating the table with positive quotes

in place of name tags

or as the focal point of the centerpiece.

Whatever you choose to do,
enjoy the process and have a happy holiday !

Snowflakes ...

playing with Lisa Engelbrecht

and all the cool supplies she has.

Beginning with this simple stamp she shared

and my imagination took off.

Not being one who likes coloring inside the lines,

I began doodling with various calligraphy pens

and gold polish

( actually nail polish )

and expanded on the original design,

over and over

again.

I highly recommend taking time to play.

My imagination is spinning with all sorts of other possibilities !

and 2 holes drilled at the top

then the center painted with chalkboard paint

I spied the tunic length Zone Bleue design

in a charming little clothing boutique

on Forest Avenue in Laguna Beach

that specializes in unique and often hand made pieces

from all over the world.

I was drawn to the feminine ruched collar
and asymmetrical design.

It fit beautifully,

but the color of the top was not flattering for my skin tone,

it being a grey/beige hue

There was enough cotton in the fabric contents
that I believed it could be dyed to a warm beige color.

Upon returning home with the new acquisition
I filled the kitchen sink with warm water
to wet the entire garment
then drained most of the water and added in the contents
of a pot of coffee that had been sitting for half of the day.
I let it soak for about 15 minutes before gently rinsing
and hanging the garment to dry,

fortunately the color came out exactly as envisioned.

As I was pressing the piece I wondered why

the designer had chosen to leave so much of

the over lock stitching exposed on the edges

of the ruffles.

Was it a conscious decision to meet a certain price point?
Maybe I've been watching too much of the show "All on the line"
on the Sundance channel with Joe Zee.
Either way, in my world I couldn't seem to let this charming
design just be as it was created,
something inside me causes me to tweak it and make it my own.

Possibly it is the possessing of a cachet of delicate delights
needing to be seen and not tucked away any longer.

I felt it needed a little more and began foraging through my
cluttered studio to find the perfect vintage laces and trims to add
to the top covering the exposed seam edges.

I chose to also dye the lace pieces selected
for embellishing in coffee
before attaching them to the garment

and pieced several laces
together for additional detail
on the diagonal seam of the back of the tunic.

The lace you see at the collar of this sweet piece
was originally going to be an underskirt on the garment
but after pinning it in place

I realized it was adding too much bulk along the bottom
and found instead the lace was the perfect embellishment
to add along the bottom of the ruched collar

and included it on the sweet tie at the collar
and then recreating the tie into a rosette.

A little R & R in Punta Mita

Punta Mita is a 1,500-acre amazingly lush beachfront village

located on the north end of Banderas Bay in Mexico,

about 10 miles north of Puerto Vallarta

and it's surrounded on three sides by the Pacific ocean

Free Range Chicken

( notice the chicken is in front of the wire, not trapped behind it! )

thus the title

the perfect plate for serving this chicken appetizer on

Spicy hot and so good !

Jalapenos are washed sliced and the seeds removed

then filled with slices of grilled chicken breast

and wrapped in thin sliced bacon

popped in the broiler

for approximately 5 minutes on each side

until crispy !

Plaid Fabric Paints

Besides aprons, I have been known to use my lovers discarded dress shirts

to protect my clothing while painting or life drawing with charcoals.

The only challenge is the sleeves getting in the way

and dragging the charcoal across your masterpiece.

Another shirt was donated to the cause last week

at the same time a box full of Plaid Fabric Paints arrived in the post.

The white shirt just happened to be next to the paints ...

becoming the perfect canvas

for testing out all the new colors!

This gives a whole new take on the saying,

"wearing my heart on my sleeve".

I have a beautiful new color chart down the arm !

Later I may cut it off at the shoulder and create a sack to store the paints in

and that way I'll have the color chart with the paints.

I've been working with a new medium (for me)

a product that doesn't need to be kiln fired

that resembles ceramic clay for a class I've been asked to teach.

It has been most challenging finding a paint that works on the surface

of this product that will give me the look of a ceramic piece.

Frustrated with the results of acrylic paints

I chose to try a fabric paint.

I'm thrilled with the results of the Plaid Fabric Paints I used here

and all the fun color combinations I can create mixing with them!

I used Liquitex gloss medium and varnish as a top coat to get the shine I was going for.

And now I discovered Plaid makes a dimensional paint

that will give a raised surface,

too fun !

I'll try experimenting with this product also

as added embellishments on the seashell charms and bottle stoppers

that the students will be making in class.

"Time Tested Beauty Tips"

I received the purse as a gift,

for no apparent reason or occasion

( actually I believe it was one of those gifts that just keep on giving,

passed from one to another until it is finally appreciated by its owner )

It had been tucked away into the corner of a crammed shelf

in my cluttered studio far too long.

It was basic and black & I loved the shape and size

there was an elegant and classic quality about it's styling.

See through could be considered sexy

yet it needed a little embellishment to dress it up

so it could finally go out in public and be appreciated.

( okay, it may just be for a costume )

Either way there was something about it that reads Holly Golightly to me...

Remember the 1961 film adaption of the novella by Truman Capote starring Audrey Hepburn ?

I can visualize her beautiful, long slim black dress

fabulous huge black hat with a wide brim,

oversized sunglasses, pearls & long black evening gloves...

dressed to the nines for her weekly visit to Sally Tomato

who is locked away in Sing Sing for tax evasion.

Tucking in a slip of paper with the "weather report" from Sally Tomato

the mafia leader, she was given to take back to his lawyer Mr. O'Shaughnessy.

The handbag is embellished with a feminine touch of

black velvet rosettes with pearl centers

just enough to give it a touch of allure and elegance

perfect for going any where

even Breakfast at Tiffany's !

I love this poem and just wanted to share.

It was written by Sam Levenson for his granddaughter

and is one of Audrey Hepburn's favorites.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.

Sweet and feminine apron design

I have a collection of aprons.

I use them while gardening,

painting, playing with clay

as well as cooking.

I tend to be a messy artist

some of us just "are".

For me it seems the more creative I am

the messier I am.

Here is my sweet new apron design...

girly, feminine & simple.

The fabric reminds me of burlap

but is soft and washable.

I used a vintage button for the closure at the collar

in place of ties at the neck,

and vintage lace with thin satin ribbon threaded through

for gather details at the sweetheart neckline

and on the pockets.

I cut long wide ties for a big fat bow in the back

and lined it for extra durability and body.

And even though it was made with scraps

found about the studio,

I see it more for puttering or cooking

than being abused with wet clay or charcoal from drawings,

at least for a while.

On a creative roll

.I came across several miscellaneous sized scraps of wood

while picking up about the cottage

and as a happy diversion I began gessoing them.

I wasn't really clear as to what I was going to create

or use them for

but it is always good to be prepared

for when the muse arrives.

Maybe it was because there was so much attention

to the size of the 10 foot waves

pounding our local coastline last week,

or because I look out upon it each day

and still I am in awe of its immensity

and how it seems to go on forever.

I began painting ocean scenes

one after another...

with no horizon line or shoreline

just scenes of forever ...

of course I realize acrylic paintings

are not supposed to be matted

or put behind glass

in shadow box frames.

But that is exactly what I chose to do.

Who makes up the rules anyway ?

They would probably be most distressed

to find out that much of the detail on the paintings

was accomplished with a wooden barbecue skewer !

High heels and pink roses

Really, what girl could resist this color?

These shoes are so pink, so princess, so pinkalicious!

Maybe it was the little girl in me who likes to play dress up

that called my attention to them

while perusing the vintage clothing shop

with my best friend.

I love high heels and found them irresistible.

A remnant of rosette trim in the matching shade of pink

was found to be the perfect embellishment.

A simple pearl was sewn into the center of each rosette

and then the rose trim glued into place.

These shoes are ready to be worn by a princess.

{ anyone knowing someone needing these shoes

for a special occasion please let me know }

Simple Summer Slipcover

needed to cover the classic white sofa in the sitting room

the solution...

created with the purchase of 2 matelasse king size quilts

( I chose the matelasse because it was so thick and durable )

brought home and laundered in very hot water

and then dried on high for major shrinkage,

and sent out to the upholsterer to create this slip cover.

He did a great job on fit,

and the best thing

it washes and dries beautifully

no ironing is needed

and it slips right back on !

Perfect for summer entertaining !

I LoVe creating and designing.

I LoVe that "I" become lost while in the process.

I enjoy and appreciate the outcome.

But for me the real JOY comes in sharing it with others.

Silk Ruffles & Rosettes

... just sharing my latest fabric creation.

A sweet silk scarf with a wide gathered ruffle on one end

and multiple layered rosettes embellishing the other,

and too many tiny ruffles to count in between!

I found the weightless silk top fluttering in the breeze,

another alley find on my walk home from the beach.

The neighbor had been editing her closet

and there were numerous items left out for others to

discover, take home and treasure or share.

I loved the beautiful fabric this top had been made with,

and having nothing to risk I tossed it in the laundry.

Grateful it laundered beautifully,

but since it wasn't my size or style,

I chose to re purpose the top into this ultra feminine ruffled scarf.

Unfortunately I did not take a before photo,

but this snapshot will show you what was left

after this sewing project was completed.

A Lovely Surprise

Kauai

Kauai is known as “The Garden Isle”

for its tropical rain forests,

fertile valleys and lush abundance of flora.

The island seems to be teeming

with numerous varieties of exotic flowers and plants

the showy red ginger, the magnificent torch ginger,

sensational birds of paradise, sweet smelling plumeria

and hundreds of species of orchids,

and an endless supply of vibrantly colored hibiscus varieties.

Kauai is like a gigantic tropical botanical garden

with inspiration everywhere you look !

Take time to play with your friends, nurture your heart and feed your soul.

A little back story.

A dear friend and fellow flower enthusiast that I have known since I was 17

lost her sweet husband suddenly 3 months ago.

In one of our late night conversations

she mentioned that she always wanted to go to Hawaii.

I googled, I researched and within 2 weeks we were " living the dream ".

We spent one sweet week together in gratitude and friendship.

Straw bags and summer fun

On a recent trip to Kauai

I snapped these photos of a few of the lovely embellished straw bags

showcased in the charming shops.

My luggage already being at its weight limit

and having several straw bags at home

I resisted the temptation.

I promise myself I will embellish my own,

with all the bits of fabrics, trims and buttons spread through out the studio,

hopefully before summer is over !

Shelves and collections

which is what sparked my imagination for this post.

Where do you keep your treasured personal photos ?

and the hat box overflowing with love poems ?

possibly in a bookshelf behind beautiful glass cabinet doors,

under lock & key ?

Shelves are perfect for showing off our collections

or adding an extra dimension to a wall.

This shelf was added as a structural element in the sitting room

to store a few antique leather bound beauties away from the sunlight.

Here the top shelves of the welsh cabinet

in the breakfast room are used

for displaying a few favorite antique tea cups and saucers.

And these shelves in the powder room are perfect

for showing off a collection of vintage perfume bottles.

Colored glass vases are always happy in a window !

The Italian ceramic collection is in easy reach

displayed on the top shelf of the 40's O'Keefe & Merritt Stove.

Here vintage sewing paraphernalia and baskets reside on this narrow storage shelf.

Then there is the crammed shelves in my art studio

wall to wall glass shelves

overflowing with my own ceramic creations.

Childhood mementos are stored above the loft window.

Vintage bird cages & baskets are throughout the cottage

but these call your attention perched on top the living room bookshelf.

Another shelf is created on a pony wall by adding

crown moldings on both sides with a flat board topping them.

You probably shouldn't get me started on boxes...

my latest creation is just back from bisque firing

and looking so lovely all in white !

I am happy with how the placement of the seashells

on the lid disguise the opening

and fit beautifully together when it is closed.

A little seahorse sculpture at the handle adds interest.
